Apart from the putatively "splendid little war" between America and Spain, war tends to be an atrocious thing. As Robert E. Lee once said, "it is well that war is so terrible, lest we grow too fond of it."
I hope people read some accounts of the Iran-Iraq War before thinking that a war between the US and Iran wouldn't be hellish. I've heard way too many people make the assumption that Iran's army would be easily defeated. Not only are we learning in Iraq that that's not how you win wars anymore, Iran's army wouldn't crumble like Saddam's. At least not if history teaches us anything.
